Ethical AI

Ethical AI refers to AI that is designed, developed, and operated in accordance with human ethical values, social responsibility, and legal norms — proactively avoiding discrimination, bias, and harm. The fundamental goal of ethical AI is to ensure that AI, as it becomes deeply embedded in society, does not undermine human dignity, fairness, privacy, or safety. The growing importance of ethical AI is driven by challenges such as: • Biased training data leading AI to make discriminatory or unfair decisions (e.g., gender or racial bias in hiring and loan decisions) • AI-enabled surveillance and privacy violations (e.g., excessive use of facial recognition technology) • The spread of fake news and deepfakes through content-generating AI • Automated decision-making systems that lack accountability and transparency To address these risks, ethical AI should be built on principles such as: • Fairness: Eliminating discrimination based on race, gender, age, and other attributes • Explainability: Making AI's reasoning comprehensible to humans • Privacy: Handling personal data safely and responsibly • Accountability: Clearly establishing responsibility when problems arise • Safety and Reliability: Preventing unpredictable behavior and malfunctions Today, companies, research institutions, and governments each have their own AI ethics guidelines and principles, and the establishment of ethical AI is advancing on a global scale. Examples include the EU's AI Act, the OECD AI Principles, and Japan's "AI Utilization Principles." Ethical AI is more than a technical issue — it is a foundation for reflecting the values and trust of society as a whole, and it has become an indispensable perspective for AI development going forward.
