Technological Singularity

The Technological Singularity (commonly called the Singularity) is the theoretical point at which artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence. From this point, AI is expected to continue improving itself at an accelerating rate, entering a new intellectual phase that humans can neither predict nor control. The term "singularity" originally comes from physics and mathematics, referring to a point where existing laws break down. It was adapted to the technological domain by futurists such as computer scientist Vernor Vinge and inventor Ray Kurzweil. Key characteristics and points of debate: • The moment AI exceeds human intelligence = the singularity • The possibility of explosive self-improvement through an "intelligence explosion" feedback loop • Profound changes across society, economy, ethics, labor, and values • Simultaneously a potential existential risk and a source of hope for humanity Predictions about when the Singularity might arrive vary widely.
