AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) refers to a next-generation form of AI that is expected to match or exceed human intelligence, capable of flexibly learning, making judgments, and applying knowledge across a wide range of tasks and domains. Also called "Strong AI," it differs from today's dominant narrow AI (which is limited to specific purposes) in that it can autonomously solve diverse challenges without being constrained to a single use case. AGI is envisioned to possess capabilities including: • The flexibility to learn autonomously and apply knowledge even in unfamiliar situations • The ability to integrate information from multiple sources, understand context, and make optimal decisions • Integration of diverse cognitive processes including reasoning, creativity, language understanding, and emotional recognition • Self-improvement and metacognition (the ability to understand one's own thinking) At present, AGI has not been achieved and remains in the stage of theoretical research and prototype development. AI research organizations such as OpenAI, DeepMind, and Anthropic have set AGI realization as a medium-to-long-term goal, with significant emphasis placed on challenges such as safety, ethics, controllability, and human cooperation. The emergence of AGI is expected to have a profound impact on every field — including education, healthcare, economics, science, and the arts — while also posing fundamental questions about society and humanity's role. As AI technology advances rapidly, "What is AGI?" and "How close are we to achieving it?" are topics that will attract increasing attention in the years ahead.
