Natural Language Processing (NLP)

Natural language processing (NLP) is the collective term for AI technologies that enable computers to understand, analyze, generate, and translate the natural languages humans use in everyday life — such as English or Japanese. By formally and structurally processing human language, NLP converts unstructured data like text and audio into forms that machines can work with. NLP encompasses tasks including: • Morphological analysis (breaking down words and identifying parts of speech) • Syntactic parsing (analyzing the grammatical structure of sentences) • Semantic analysis (understanding the meaning of words and sentences) • Sentiment analysis (classifying emotions such as positive or negative) • Text summarization (extracting key points from long documents) • Question answering (generating natural responses to questions) • Machine translation (converting between different languages) In recent years, the emergence of large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT has dramatically expanded the accuracy and scope of NLP applications. Chatbots, voice assistants, automated FAQ responses, and meeting transcription are just a few of the ways NLP is used across business and daily life. NLP is increasingly seen as the bridge connecting AI and human communication, and its importance will only grow in the years ahead.
