Prompt

A prompt is the text or instruction you provide to a generative AI such as ChatGPT — the "trigger" that determines what kind of output (text, image, audio, etc.) the AI produces. In Japanese, it is sometimes translated as 指示文 (instruction text), 入力文 (input text), or 問いかけ (query). For example, when you type "Please tell me what to pack for a trip" into ChatGPT, that sentence is the prompt. The content of the prompt has a major impact on the AI's response — including the content, tone, format, and accuracy — making it an extremely important element for getting the most out of generative AI. Types and uses of prompts include: • Instructional prompts: Direct commands such as "Please do ~" or "Please explain ~" • Question prompts: Query-style inputs such as "Why is ~?" or "Tell me more about ~" • Context prompts: Providing background information before requesting output (e.g., "You are a professional editor. Please proofread the following text…") • Few-shot prompts: Providing a few examples to guide the format of output • Chain-of-Thought prompts: Asking the model to show its reasoning steps, improving accuracy on complex reasoning tasks In image generation AI, prompts act as "instructions for a painting" — for example, "A cat sleeping on the moon, in watercolor style." As the capabilities of generative AI improve, the importance of prompt design also grows. Crafting effective prompts is increasingly recognized as the key to unlocking the full potential of AI.
