Narrow AI

Narrow AI refers to artificial intelligence that demonstrates its capabilities only within a specific task or domain. Also called "Weak AI," the vast majority of AI in practical use around us today falls into this category. For example, an AI that detects people in images, one that performs automatic translation, or one that defeats professionals at shogi or Go—each has high accuracy in a specific domain, but lacks general-purpose thinking ability. This means it cannot simply be transferred to a different task. Primary examples of narrow AI: • Voice assistants (e.g., Siri, Alexa) • Facial recognition AI (e.g., smartphone face unlock) • Object detection systems in autonomous vehicles • Recommendation engines (e.g., product suggestions on e-commerce sites) • Text generation AI (e.g., email reply assistance) Current AI technology has found real-world applications across many areas of business and daily life through the advancement of narrow AI. In contrast, an AI capable of learning flexibly and applying knowledge across multiple domains—as humans do—is called Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and remains at the research stage. Narrow AI is rapidly being deployed in society due to its practicality, efficiency, and ease of adoption, and is recognized as the frontline group of technologies through which people experience the benefits of AI most directly.
