About "atama+"

What is atama+?

atama+ is an AI-powered learning system provided to cram schools and prep schools by atama plus Inc. (Tokyo, Japan). Its AI diagnoses each student's level of understanding and the root causes of their stumbling blocks, then automatically builds a one-of-a-kind personalized curriculum. Since its launch in July 2017, adoption has spread to more than 4,500 cram school and prep school classrooms nationwide as of July 2026, including major players such as Sundai Preparatory School, Z-kai Group's Eikoh, Meiko Gijuku, Kyoshin, and Mabuchi Kyoshitsu. In July 2026, atama plus joined the KUMON group (Kumon Educational Japan).

Its defining feature is tracing the cause of "I don't get it" back across grade levels. For example, if a student stumbles in a high school math unit and the AI determines the root cause lies in an incomplete grasp of junior high material, it goes back that far and rebuilds the lecture videos and exercises. Students work through their personalized lessons on a tablet, while teachers use the dedicated app "atama+ COACH" to monitor every student's progress in real time and focus on coaching — this division of labor between AI and humans is the design philosophy behind atama+.

How to use it

atama+ is provided as teaching material for cram schools and prep schools, so it is not an app individuals purchase directly. The typical path to getting started:

  1. Find a school that uses atama+

The official school finder (product.atama.plus/juku) lets you search partner schools by region (Hokkaido/Tohoku through Kyushu/Okinawa). If you already attend a cram school, ask whether it offers an atama+ course.

  2. Take the diagnostic in a trial lesson

Many partner schools offer free trial lessons. Taking the AI diagnostic first visualizes which units you understand, where you stumble, and the root causes.

  3. Study with your personalized lessons

Following the AI-built curriculum based on your diagnostic results, you cycle through roughly 5-minute lecture videos and exercises. Content is reorganized in real time as your understanding changes.

  4. Get coaching from teachers

Teachers watch your learning data in atama+ COACH, step in when you get stuck, and adjust your study plan.

To study from home, there is the official "atama+ Online Juku" (for junior high students through graduates). After joining an online trial/consultation session, you get a 14-day free trial and start by building a study plan with a dedicated study trainer.

Key features

  • Diagnostic AI — pinpoints understanding and root causes of stumbling blocks per unit, tracing back across grade levels
  • Personalized curriculum — the AI automatically sequences lecture videos (about 5 minutes each), exercises, and reviews based on diagnostics and goals, updating with every answer
  • atama+ COACH — the teacher-facing app; shows every student's progress, stumbling points, and focus level in real time
  • Generative-AI question support (launched March 2026) — photograph a problem sheet to get hints and explanations, then ask follow-up questions via chat as many times as needed. Multiple AI models are combined to counter hallucinations, and explanations follow the national curriculum guidelines. Covers 11 subjects for 1st-year junior high students through graduates
  • Sundai atama+ Mock Exams — online mock exams co-developed with Sundai. Taken from home, with AI weakness analysis available immediately after finishing, feeding directly into atama+ study. Online examinees surpassed 250,000 (as of October 2022)

Pricing

Pricing for atama+ itself (the B2B product for schools) is not public (inquiry required); students pay for it as part of each school's tuition, which varies by the school's course structure — check with the school you plan to attend.

The one place with published consumer pricing is the official "atama+ Online Juku" (official prices as of August 19, 2026; all in Japanese yen, tax included).

In addition, atama plus runs the in-person "Shingaku Kobetsu atama+ Juku" (over 70 locations nationwide) with enrollment fees of 22,000 yen for elementary/junior high and 33,000 yen for high school/graduates (tax included) and flat-rate "attend as much as you like" tuition — the tuition amounts are not published and are provided via information request.

Free plan / trial

There is no free version of atama+ itself. Two free entry points exist:

  • 14-day free trial of atama+ Online Juku — available after the trial/consultation session; cancel within the free period and you pay nothing
  • Free trial lessons at partner schools and atama+ Juku — atama+ Juku has no entrance exam, and partner-school trial lessons often include the AI diagnostic

Japanese language support

This is a service built by a Japanese company for learners in Japan: the UI, all learning content, and support are in Japanese. Materials follow Japan's national curriculum guidelines and university entrance exams (Common Test and individual exams), covering 11 subjects as of 2022. It is not an English-market product, so students studying in Japanese can use it naturally from day one.

Partnerships with major cram school groups are the core of its track record.

  • Sundai group — business alliance announced in September 2019, with rollout to Sundai Preparatory School locations nationwide from April 2020 (initially math, English, physics, chemistry). In April 2024 this deepened into a capital and business alliance in which the educational foundation Surugadai Gakuen acquired 35.5% of atama plus shares, and the two now jointly run "atama+ Online Juku"
  • Z-kai Group (Eikoh) — a November 2019 alliance brought atama+ into 133 "Eikoh no Kobetsu Vizavi" classrooms; in March 2021 the blended in-person/online course "atama+ Vizavi" launched at 204 schools in the Tokyo area
  • Joining the KUMON group — on July 5, 2026, Kumon Educational Japan acquired 100% of atama plus shares. The official announcement states the mission and organization will continue unchanged

The official site also lists more than 40 partner school brands, including Meiko Gijuku, Kyoshin, and Mabuchi Kyoshitsu.

How it differs from other tools

  • Duolingo — a language app built around daily habit-forming. The first choice if your goal is habit-driven language learning rather than systematic study of exam subjects
  • SpeakBuddy — focused on English speaking. atama+'s English targets entrance exams and does not cover speaking practice, so the two are complementary
  • LingoChamp — English-learning AI strong in pronunciation correction; a different goal from atama+, which builds English as an exam subject (grammar and reading)
