What is MacGPT?
MacGPT, built by Jordi Bruin, is a lightweight app for accessing ChatGPT from the Mac menu bar, with a Global mode you can summon over any app and an Inline mode usable in any text field. Pricing is pay-what-you-want (from $0, one-time; native features need your own OpenAI API key). Note: it hasn't been updated recently (models top out at GPT-4o), and much of its use has been taken over by OpenAI's official free ChatGPT Mac app.

What is MacGPT
MacGPT is a lightweight app for quickly accessing ChatGPT from the Mac menu bar. Built by indie developer Jordi Bruin (goodsnooze), it bills itself as "ChatGPT in your menubar." Beyond menu-bar access, it offers "Global" (an overlay in the center of the screen), "Inline" (type a trigger in any text field and it generates), and "Conversation" (voice), so you can call up ChatGPT from any app. It has been used by 300,000+ people.
Note on current status. MacGPT hasn't been updated recently (the site reads 2023, and models top out at GPT-4o with no GPT-5), and much of its use has been taken over by OpenAI's official ChatGPT Mac app (free), which offers menu-bar residency, a global shortcut, and voice. That said, its "Inline" mode—calling it directly inside any text field—remains a unique strength. It is free to get, and remains an option for those who want a lightweight menu-bar resident.
Global mode brings up an input field in the center of the screen with a keyboard shortcut, so you can ask ChatGPT on top of any app. You can do things like generate blog title ideas or polish text without switching apps.

Get the app
Download from the official site (Gumroad). It supports macOS 12 Monterey and up.

Log in or set an API key
To use web ChatGPT, log in; to use native features (Global/Inline/Conversation), set your own OpenAI API key.

Call up ChatGPT from the menu-bar icon.

Bring up the Global input field with a shortcut, or type a trigger in a text field for Inline (Global/Inline require macOS 13 Ventura or newer).

How it differs from other ways to access ChatGPT
MacGPT's strengths are its lightweight menu-bar residency and the Inline mode usable in any text field—as a veteran indie app. On the other hand, menu bar, shortcut, and voice are now available in OpenAI's official Mac app too.
