GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is a method of optimizing content and communications so that your site or brand is cited as evidence and recommended by "generative engines" — AI search experiences such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode that generate an answer text in response to a question. It is also translated as "generative AI search optimization" or "AI search optimization," and covers roughly the same ground as the term "LLMO" used in Japan. How it works: The term GEO was proposed in the 2023 paper "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by a research team including Princeton University. A generative engine reads several pages gathered by search, condenses the key points into a single answer, and attaches a few links as evidence. The paper reports that writing styles such as stating statistics, citing sources, and quoting experts increase visibility within the answer. In other words, whereas traditional SEO focuses on collecting links, GEO emphasizes "writing that is easy for AI to summarize and easy to draw on as evidence." In practice: A page that ranks high in SEO is not necessarily cited in AI search. So the usual sequence is: (1) find out which pages are being cited for the expected questions, (2) restructure your own pages with conclusion first, comparison tables, FAQs, and primary information, (3) make them easy for AI crawlers to read via structured data and llms.txt, and (4) increase placements on external media that tend to be cited. Results are measured by mention rate and share of citations (AI visibility). Related tools: Many overseas tools such as Profound, Peec AI, OtterlyAI, and AthenaHQ position themselves as "GEO" or "AEO" tools, and Japanese products Genview and Mieruca GEO include it in their names. There are also tools on the production side, such as Writesonic and Readdy, that create content or sites in a form AI is more likely to cite.
