A service by Character Technologies, Inc. (US) for chatting by text or voice call with more than 10 million AI Characters, most of them made by users. What is Character.AI?
Character.AI (often shortened to c.ai) is an AI character chat service operated by Character Technologies, Inc. in the United States. According to the official site, more than 10 million (10M+) Characters are available—from anime- and history-inspired personas to original creations made by users—and you can talk with them by text chat or voice call.
Unlike ChatGPT, which is designed as an "answer anything" assistant, Character.AI is built as entertainment for roleplay, storytelling and casual conversation with Characters. Anyone can create and publish a Character and even give it a voice. It is available on the web (character.ai) and as iOS / Android apps, and the app supports a Japanese-language interface.
Age assurance is required. According to the official Help Center, all users must complete an age assurance check, and only accounts verified as 18 or older can chat with Characters. Accounts identified as under 18 are placed in a reading-focused experience without chat (such as Reading Mode). Under the Terms of Service, users under 13 (under 16 in the EEA and UK) may not sign up.
How to use
- Create an account Sign up on the web (character.ai) or in the app with Google, Apple or an email address. If prompted to verify your age, follow the on-screen instructions (you can also start from Settings → Advanced → Verify Age). Verification is handled by the partner Persona.
- Find a Character to talk to Pick a Character from "For You" on the home screen, genre tabs (Creative, Fantasy, Gaming, etc.) or search. Each Character shows its creator, description and chat count.
- Chat Opening a Character starts the conversation with its first line (Greeting). You can rate replies with the stars under each message to send feedback. The conversation style (Chat Style) can be selected on screen.
- Talk by voice If a Character has a voice, you can listen to its replies. With Character Calls you can have a two-way conversation like a phone call, and the call is also saved as a text chat.
- Create your own Character From "+" (or +Create on the web), choose Character, then set a name, avatar, voice, greeting, tags and visibility—you can publish in a few minutes.

Publish your own Character in five minutes
Most Characters on Character.AI are not made by the company but are works by users. The official Creator Guide describes the setup as "the express route — five minutes to a live Character": choose a name, generate an avatar, add a voice and a greeting, and other users can start talking to it right away.
For those who want to go deeper, there is the Character Definition for detailed personality, the Lorebook for world-building, and Character Voice for creating a voice from your own audio. Visibility can be set to public, link-only or private, so you can also keep a Character to yourself as a practice partner or a sounding board for your creative work.
Pricing
The basic features are free, with no limit on the number of messages. Paid plans change access to premium Chat Styles, ads and memory capacity.

The c.ai+ prices are the standard rates (US$9.99/month, US$94.99/year) stated in the official Help Center's sale terms. Limited-time introductory discounts are sometimes offered.
Age restrictions and safety
In response to news reports and questions from regulators about minors' use, Character.AI announced in November 2025 that it would remove open-ended chat with Characters for users under 18 (and said similar changes would roll out to other countries over the following months). An official blog post in September 2026 called it "one of the most significant safety decisions we have ever made."

The chat screen shows a notice: "This is A.I. and not a real person. Treat everything it says as fiction." The official Help Center also states plainly that Characters make things up.

FAQ
Q. Is Character.AI free? A. Yes. Messaging is unlimited even on the free plan, and the Character Voice feature is free too. Paid plans are for premium Chat Styles and fewer or no ads.
Q. Can I chat in Japanese? A. If you write in Japanese, the conversation continues in Japanese. The app supports a Japanese interface, and the official FAQ lists Japanese as supported for voice calls (Character Calls).
Q. What is the minimum age? A. Users under 13 (under 16 in the EEA and UK) cannot sign up. In addition, chatting with Characters is limited to accounts verified as 18 or older through age assurance.
Q. How do I cancel a paid plan? A. If you subscribed on the web, use your account settings or the support page; if you subscribed in the app, use the subscription settings of the App Store / Google Play. You can keep using the plan until the end of the paid period.
