What is Junie

Junie is an autonomous AI coding agent from JetBrains, integrated into JetBrains IDEs. Give it a task in natural language and it proceeds autonomously — planning, editing multiple files, running commands and testing. It reached GA in June 2026, and because it can directly use IDE context such as indexes, build configuration, test runners, debuggers and DB connections, it handles projects more precisely than external tools. It's the same kind of AI coding agent as Cursor or Windsurf, but distinctively native to the JetBrains family of IDEs.

Previously limited to certain paid IDEs, it now supports most major IDEs (including the free IntelliJ IDEA Community, plus PyCharm / WebStorm / GoLand / PhpStorm / RubyMine / Rider / CLion / Android Studio, and more). Using it requires a JetBrains AI subscription (a free plan is available; credit-based), as of August 2026.

Rather than writing line by line, with Junie you describe what you want and it decides the steps and drives it to completion. You can switch among Code Mode (autonomous), Ask Mode (read-only analysis) and Plan Mode (approve the plan before implementation). Review the plan and run

Review the plan in Plan Mode and let Code Mode implement and test autonomously.
Review and merge

Review the generated changes and adjust as needed before merging.

Using it requires a JetBrains AI subscription, and agent features like Junie consume AI credits (1 credit ≈ $1).
