What is Comet?
An AI browser from Perplexity. The Comet Assistant in the sidebar summarizes and explains the pages and tabs you have open, while the Comet Agent takes over browser actions such as filling in forms, making bookings, and drafting emails. Perplexity is the default search engine. Available on Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android, and the browser itself is free (Comet Plus, which unlocks articles from partner publishers, is $5/month and included at no extra cost with Perplexity Pro and Max).

About "Comet"
What is Comet?
Comet is an AI browser from Perplexity, the AI search company. You browse websites just as you would in any browser, but you can also ask the AI that lives in the sidebar to "summarize this page" or "compare the tabs I have open," and even have it carry out actions in the browser for you, such as filling in forms, making bookings, and drafting emails.
Comet launched on July 9, 2025 for subscribers of Perplexity's top plan (Max), and since October 2, 2025 anyone can download it for free. It is now available on Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. Perplexity is the default search engine, so questions typed into the address bar return answers with citations. Official how-to guides are also available in Japanese.
Assistant "understands," Agent "does"
Perplexity's official guide explains Comet's AI as two distinct roles. A simple way to think about it: use the Assistant for research and reading, and the Agent for tedious tasks.
Comet Assistant
The AI in the sidebar. Summarizes articles, emails, videos, and PDFs, answers questions about the current page, translates and fact-checks, and compares multiple tabs
Comet Agent
Handles manual work for you: clicking buttons, filling in forms, booking, scheduling meetings, sending emails, making purchases, unsubscribing from newsletters
The Agent often asks for confirmation before acting, and you can stop it at any time with the "Stop" button. When connecting to Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, and similar services, the user grants permission each time.
How to use
-
Download it
Download the Mac or Windows version from the official page (perplexity.ai/comet) and install it. On smartphones, get it from the App Store or Google Play.
-
Bring over your current browser data
On first launch, you can import Chrome bookmarks, saved passwords, extensions, browsing history, and more in one click, so you can carry over your usual setup.
-
Ask the Assistant (Alt + A)
Open the sidebar and ask things like "What are the key points of this page?" or "Make a table comparing this product with the one in my previous tab." You can point to a specific tab with "@tab name." For a quick summary of the page, press Alt + S.
-
Hand off tasks
Make requests that involve actions, such as "Check whether I'm a fit for this job based on my LinkedIn profile" or "Compare flights for next week." The Agent opens pages, works through them, and asks for confirmation where needed.
-
Turn frequent instructions into shortcuts
Call up routine instructions as shortcuts, such as "/tldr" (summarize) or "/cite" (format a citation). For hands-free use, there's also voice mode (Alt + Shift + V).
Features
01Read and research
- One-click summaries — Instantly summarize articles, videos, PDFs, and social posts (Alt + S)
- Ask about the page — Ask questions about the open page by text or voice
- Cross-tab comparison — Combine information from multiple tabs to compare and organize it
- Search with citations — Because Perplexity is the default search engine, you start from a cited answer rather than a list of links
02Delegate
- Browser automation — The AI clicks, fills in forms, and navigates sites on its own
- Service integrations — Use information from connected accounts such as Gmail, Calendar, and Google Drive to schedule and draft emails
- Tasks & shortcuts — Set up routine work as tasks, or call it up with shortcuts that start with "/"
03Organize
- AI tab organization — Group related tabs, close duplicate or unused ones, and create color-coded collections
- Voice mode — Browse, search, and manage tabs by voice alone
- Ad blocking & Chrome extensions — Built-in ad blocker, and Chrome extensions work too
Pricing
The Comet browser itself is free. You can download it and use the Assistant without subscribing to a paid Perplexity plan. What costs money is "Comet Plus," which unlocks articles from partner publishers, and Perplexity's own paid plans.
| Plan | Price | What you get in Comet |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | The browser, Comet Assistant, summaries, tab organization, voice mode, and more |
| Comet Plus | $5/month (standalone) | Access to content from partner news organizations and publishers |
| Perplexity Pro | $17/month equivalent (billed annually) | Comet Plus at no extra cost. Perplexity's top models and higher usage limits |
| Perplexity Max | $167/month equivalent (billed annually) | Everything in Pro plus the highest usage limits and priority access to new features |
Per-plan usage limits within Comet are not officially listed. Perplexity Pro and Max advertise "higher usage limits" and "access to top AI models," but specific numbers—such as how many times you can use summaries or the Agent in Comet—are not published, so check the in-app display for your actual limits. Details on Perplexity's own pricing and features are on our [Perplexity page](https://ai-best-search.com/products/perplexity).
Comet Plus pricing and its inclusion in Pro and Max are based on Perplexity's official announcement of August 25, 2025; Pro and Max prices are based on the official pricing page as of October 14, 2026 (monthly equivalent when billed annually, in USD). Please check the official site for the latest information.
Reviews and reputation
- In its official announcement of the free release, Perplexity said that "when Perplexity users first downloaded Comet, the number of questions they asked increased by 6–18x in the first day," positioning Comet as a browser that closes the gap between searching and asking.
- It has been covered repeatedly by Japanese media such as Impress Watch, GIZMODO, and AIsmiley, and is introduced as a leading AI browser.
- On the other hand, because the AI reads page content and acts on it, risks such as malicious pages planting instructions for the AI (prompt injection) can't be avoided entirely. Perplexity's own official guide advises avoiding suspicious content and reviewing the Agent's actions as you go.
Things to check before adopting
01How data is handled
- By default, data stays on your device — Browsing history, cookies, open tabs, and so on are stored locally, and passwords and payment information are kept in the OS's secure storage and, according to Perplexity, are not stored on its servers
- Personal searches send data — When you make a request that needs personal information, such as "organize my email," your open tabs and relevant browsing history are processed by Perplexity. You can delete history and cookies at any time in settings (comet://settings/privacy)
02When delegating actions
- Review confirmation prompts — When the Agent asks for confirmation before a purchase or sending something, check that it matches your intent before proceeding
- Stop it any time — If something seems off, stop it with the "Stop" button and report the issue
- Manage integration permissions yourself — Access to Gmail and other services can be revoked or changed in Perplexity's settings
03Using it at work
- Enterprise guidance is available — The official help center has a "Comet for Enterprise" section with information for organizational deployment. If you plan to use it for work, review it alongside your internal information-management rules
How Comet differs from other AI tools
| Aspect | Comet | Perplexity (web & app) | Autonomous agents (Manus, Genspark, etc.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Your browser itself | Website and app | A cloud workspace |
| Best at | Understanding the page you're on and acting on it right there | Search and research with citations | Taking a goal and delivering finished work |
| Logged-in sites | It's your browser, so they can be acted on directly | Not applicable | Requires integration per service |
| Pricing | Free (Comet Plus $5/month) | Free to paid plans | Varies by service |
As a rule of thumb: choose Comet if you want AI as an extension of your everyday browsing, Perplexity if you just want answers to research questions, and Manus or Genspark if you want to hand off an entire body of work.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Q. Is Comet free?
Yes. Since October 2, 2025, anyone can download and use it for free. You can use the browser and Comet Assistant without a paid Perplexity plan. Comet Plus, which unlocks articles from partner publishers, is $5/month and included at no extra cost for Perplexity Pro and Max subscribers.
Q. Can I use it in Japanese?
You can ask questions and give instructions in Japanese. The iOS app supports Japanese, and official how-to guides (the Comet Resource Hub) are also available in Japanese.
Q. Which operating systems are supported?
According to the official page, Comet is available on Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android.
Q. Can I move my Chrome bookmarks and passwords to Comet?
Yes. In one click you can import Chrome bookmarks, saved passwords and autofill data, extensions, and browsing history and settings. Chrome extensions also work as-is.
Q. What is the difference between Comet Assistant and Comet Agent?
The Assistant, in the sidebar, handles "understanding and explaining": summarizing pages, answering questions, and comparing tabs. The Agent handles "taking action": clicking, filling in forms, booking, and sending emails.
Q. Is it safe to use?
Perplexity states that by default browsing data is stored on your device, and that passwords and payment information are not stored on its servers. However, delegating actions to an AI carries risks such as manipulation by malicious pages. When the Agent asks for confirmation, review the details, and stop any suspicious behavior with the "Stop" button.
Q. How does it compare with ChatGPT Atlas?
OpenAI's AI browser "ChatGPT Atlas" was discontinued on August 9, 2026, with its features carried over to the ChatGPT desktop app and other products. Among standalone AI browsers offered directly by a major AI company, Comet is the leading option.
The information on this page is based on what was published on Perplexity's official site, official blog, and the Comet Resource Hub as of October 14, 2026. Features, pricing, and supported platforms may change, so please check the official site for the latest information.
