Guidelines are published under the supervision of Mori Hamada & Matsumoto. Rather than simply aggregating documents, the range of material referenced in practice is curated by a law firm — that is what separates it from a general-purpose search service.
Scoring at full-marks level on the bar exam's multiple-choice questions
What Legalscape claims is being a "legal research AI specialized for legal information." It is not a general-purpose generative AI tuned for legal work; it is designed so that what it references is limited to specialist material — legal books, case commentaries, and government guidelines.
As evidence of its accuracy, the official site cites a Nikkei article (May 22, 2025) headlined "Legalscape's AI scores at full-marks level on the bar exam's multiple-choice questions."

Jump straight from statutes and cited works in the body text to the originals. Rather than stopping at the summary, checking the primary source becomes part of the same motion.
02Reverse lookup
List the works that cite the document or statute you are currently reading. This is what you need when looking for a different position on a given interpretation. Ordinary search only moves upstream; reverse lookup moves downstream.
03Proximity search, preview, table of contents
Read around the relevant passage, check contents without opening a work, grasp structure from the table of contents. The motions of handling books on paper, moved online as-is.

Adoption and reception

All five of Japan's largest law firms have adopted it. As of the September 24, 2024 announcement, Anderson Mori & Tomotsune, TMI Associates, Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu, Nishimura & Asahi, and Mori Hamada & Matsumoto were named, with more than 16,000 users.
Adoption is not limited to large firms. Official case studies include Kyoto Fusioneering (a nuclear fusion startup), the trading house Kanematsu, Iwaita Law Office, Y Cube Law Office, Josui Law Office, and Acropeace. On July 29, 2026 the company announced that adoption now spans all 47 prefectures, and on August 6, 2026 that all 50-plus attorneys at Kensei Sogo Law Office had adopted it.
For results, the company cites a post-trial survey (N=633) in which about 80% of users felt their research time had been reduced. In individual cases, Acropeace reports that "the workload for the initial phase of legal research dropped to less than one-tenth," and the judicial scrivener office Emichi reports that "two to three hours of research now takes as little as five minutes."
User comments published on the official site indicate what is valued.

If you want research as an extension of reading books, Legalscape fits; if you want to surface issues across statutes and past legal consultations, Legal Brain is closer in character.
