Before you evaluate the price
- Individual contracts are not available. Legalscape is sold to corporations and law firms, so an individual lawyer signing up personally is not a supported route.
- There is a two-week free trial. Whether the included books cover your practice areas varies a great deal by firm, so confirming that during the trial is the practical approach.
- Other plans and volume-based quotes require contacting the vendor directly.
Reviews and who it suits
What people rate highly
- It removes the time spent tracking down books: the core value is less "the AI writes the answer" and more "you reach the primary source—the legal literature—quickly." The step of locating and ordering a book you do not have on the shelf disappears.
- The evidence is the book itself: the AI does not just summarise; it links back to the page it drew from. That fits work where you have to cite sources in a written opinion.
- Update notifications: if the material underpinning a piece of research is later amended, you are notified—so you can tell whether past research has gone stale.
Points to be aware of
- ¥55,000 per month is not trivial for a small firm: the judgement comes down to comparing it with what you currently spend on books and on the time it takes to find them. At a low research frequency, the economics are hard to justify.
- Fit depends on the catalogue: how valuable it feels depends on whether your practice areas line up with the books included. There is no way to settle that other than the trial.
Who it suits: law firms and in-house legal teams that do book-based research often and want to share knowledge across several people. If precedent search is your main goal, it is worth comparing against a dedicated case-law database.
Comparable services: Legalbrain covers the same legal research space. If you are evaluating both, the useful axes are the type of content included (books versus statutes and case law) and the pricing model.
