About "ZEN Study"
What is ZEN Study
ZEN Study is a learning app provided by Dowango. Formerly called N Prep School, it gives access to university-entrance preparation, programming, web design and video creation tracks for ¥1,100 per month (tax included).
Its programming track is designed to take someone "from no programming experience to the level of being hired as a web engineer at an IT company." The material is entirely original, written from scratch by working Dowango engineers and, per the official description, revised continuously to follow current technology. Every instructor is a working Dowango engineer with service development experience.

Linux, Git and Docker are in the introductory course
The notable thing about ZEN Study's programming track is that the very first course — Introduction to Programming: Web Application Development — lists Linux, Git, GitHub, Docker, web security and Hono among its learning elements, alongside JavaScript.
Most introductory material teaches only language syntax and defers the environment. ZEN Study explicitly commits to teaching from basic PC operation without skipping steps, so the command line, version control and containers all fall within a course meant for complete beginners. This is precisely the layer whose value rises as more implementation is delegated to AI agents.
How to use it
-
Register for free
Create an account and browse the courses. Viewing the material and taking classes requires the monthly subscription.
-
Start with the introductory course
Introduction to Programming: Web Application Development takes you through HTML/CSS/JavaScript basics, Linux and web server basics, and web application development (foundations and applications). No prior knowledge required.
-
Combine live classes and Q&A
The written material is for self-study; the live classes are for working through something thoroughly. You can ask questions in comments during class, and instructors check comprehension with polls and hand-raising.
-
Choose a branch by goal
Large-scale web applications (Scala), computer science, smartphone apps, Unity, introduction to machine learning — in any order.
Course structure
01Web development
From the beginner's entrance to large-scale development.

- Large-scale Web Apps: Scala Foundations and Applications — object-oriented and functional programming
- Concurrent Programming — threads, the actor model
- Practical course / Niconico reproduction course — Play Framework, rebuilding a real service
02Computer science
The theory taught in university CS departments.
- Data Structures and Algorithms — computational order, big-O notation, search
- Automata — the theory of strings and regular expressions
- Networking — from the link layer to the application layer
03Apps and more
There is also a route that starts from what you want to build.
- Android (Kotlin) / iPhone (Swift) — smartphone app development

How it differs from other learning services
ZEN Study stands out for the breadth it offers at the price, and for material that does not skip the environment. It is, however, a comprehensive learning service built around written material, live classes and Q&A — a different shape from services centered on instantly runnable in-browser exercises.
| ZEN Study | Progate | paiza Learning | Recursion | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Author | Working Dowango engineers | Progate | paiza | Former Meta engineers |
| Environment topics | Inside the intro course | Separate lessons | Partly | Assumed |
| CS theory | Yes | No | Partly | Central |
| Monthly (tax incl.) | ¥1,100 | From ¥990 | ¥980–¥1,490 | $61 |
For in-browser exercises, Progate or paiza Learning; to go deeper into CS, Recursion; to lock in the terminal and Git first, WebTerm Learn.
