What is Progate

Progate is a programming learning service operated by Progate, Inc. since 2014. You learn concepts from illustration-led slides, then write code in the browser and see the result — no local environment needed. 3.7 million users across more than 100 countries.

The catalog covers HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Python, SQL, Java, PHP, Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Node.js, Go, Sass and jQuery, and — unusually — also includes Command Line and Git on the environment side, plus courses on generative AI and AI agents.

There is even a Claude Code Introduction (beta)

What sets Progate apart right now is that courses on using AI agents sit on the same shelf as the language primers.

• Generative AI Basics — you progress by conversing with an AI in the browser rather than reading. It covers prompt patterns (context, role, output format), image generation, summarizing documents, guarding against hallucination, and copyright in AI images. No programming experience required
• Claude Code Introduction (beta) — in a browser-based exercise environment, you learn agent basics, project configuration via CLAUDE.md, automation through skills, and safety management via permissions
• Let AI Write Code — how to run implementation work through an AI

An introductory course that covers CLAUDE.md and permissions is rare for a learning service. It lets you experience the operational crux — deciding what an agent may and may not do — before you meet it at work. Note that beta courses may be changed or removed without notice.

How to use it

1. Create a free account

   Sign up with an email address. The opening of each lesson is free to try.

2. Choose a path

   Pick a goal-oriented path such as Web Production Basics, Practical Backend Development, Practical Python or React Development, or take a single language on its own.

3. Slides first, then exercises

   Read the concept on the slide, then write and run code in the editor beside it. Nothing to prepare.

4. Slot in the environment lessons

   Running Command Line (1 lesson + 9 articles) and Git (1 lesson + 9 articles) early reduces the stalls that come later.

5. Move on to practical courses

   The Pro plan reaches work-level material: Practical Backend Development, Practical Python, TypeScript Introduction and more.

How it differs from other learning services

Progate's strength is the design of the first step. Illustrated slides plus instantly runnable exercises let you bypass the classic wall of environment setup. If you want CS fundamentals or infrastructure, other services fit better.
