About "Hugging Face"

What is Hugging Face?

Hugging Face is a machine learning platform for publishing, sharing and finding AI models, datasets and demo apps. Its core service, the "Hub", hosts more than 2 million models, more than 500,000 datasets and more than 1 million demo apps (Spaces) published by companies, research institutions and individuals around the world, and more than 400,000 organizations use it (figures from the official website as of October 10, 2026). Much as GitHub is for code, it is the place where open AI models are distributed and downloaded.

Open-weight versions of Qwen, DeepSeek and Mistral, as well as many image and video generation models such as Stable Diffusion, FLUX and Wan, are downloaded from Hugging Face. Browsing and reading about models is free and requires no account.

Besides model sharing, it offers paid compute services: Spaces for publishing demos that run in the browser, Inference Providers for calling many models through a single API, and Inference Endpoints for running your own dedicated inference servers. Hugging Face also develops open-source libraries such as Transformers, Diffusers and Datasets.

How to use

  1. Find models and datasets On huggingface.co, browse "Models", "Datasets" and "Spaces", filtering by keyword, task (text generation, image generation, speech recognition, etc.), library, language or license. Each model page (model card) explains usage, license, training data and more.
  2. Create an account You don't need an account just to browse or download, but a (free) account is required to access gated models that require agreeing to terms, to create Spaces and to use the APIs.
  3. Download and use models Download a model by name using the Python huggingface_hub or transformers libraries, or the hf command-line tool. Some tools, such as ComfyUI, automatically fetch the required models from Hugging Face.
  4. Try or publish demos on Spaces In Spaces you can try demos published by others right in your browser. To build your own, create an app with Gradio, Docker or similar and publish it. Free CPU hardware (2 vCPU, 16GB RAM) and ZeroGPU (shared GPUs) are available, and more powerful GPUs can be chosen with hourly billing.
  5. Run inference via API Create an access token and call models through Inference Providers. An OpenAI-compatible endpoint (https://router.huggingface.co/v1) is also available, so existing code needs only small changes.

Key features

01The Hub (where things are shared)

  • Models — Repositories of public models, with model cards, files, version history and discussions
  • Datasets — Datasets for training and evaluation. Data Studio (the data viewer) lets you inspect their contents in the browser
  • Spaces — A place to publish and run AI apps built with Gradio or Docker, so you can try models in the browser without installing them
  • Private repositories and organizations — Keep internal models and data private and share them among organization members

02Inference and compute

  • Inference Providers — An API for calling models from multiple inference providers with a single Hugging Face token. You are charged the provider's rates directly, with no markup from Hugging Face
  • Inference Endpoints — Deploy a chosen model to dedicated servers (CPU or GPU) and use it as an API. Billed by the hour
  • ZeroGPU — Dynamically allocates shared GPUs (NVIDIA RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell) to Spaces only when needed. Free within a daily quota
  • Jobs — Run any workload on GPUs and other compute (pay-as-you-go)

03Open-source libraries and apps

  • Libraries — Widely used AI development libraries including Transformers, Diffusers, Datasets, Tokenizers, PEFT, TRL, Accelerate, Safetensors and smolagents
  • HuggingChat — A chat app for talking with open models. Its "Omni" router automatically picks a model for each request

Pros and cons

Pros

  • A huge number of public AI models and datasets; it is the standard place to obtain open models
  • Browsing, downloading and creating public repositories are free, and Spaces lets you try demos without a local GPU
  • With Inference Providers you can switch between many models using a single token and an OpenAI-compatible API
  • PRO is affordable at $9/month, and paid GPUs and inference are charged only for what you use

Cons

  • The interface and documentation are in English, with no Japanese display
  • Licenses and terms differ by model, so you must check the model card yourself to see whether commercial use is allowed
  • Paid services are billed in USD by credit card, and fees are non-refundable
  • The free ZeroGPU daily quota is small (5 minutes for free accounts), and there can be queues when busy

Reputation and reviews

According to the official website, more than 400,000 organizations use Hugging Face and more than 2 million models are published there. Hugging Face also appears as the place to get the models on our pages for Qwen, Wan, ComfyUI and others. If you work with open AI models, it is hard to avoid. On the other hand, the English-only interface and the need to check each model's license can be hurdles for first-time users. A good way to get a feel for it is to start by trying the Spaces (demos) of models you are interested in, right in your browser.

How it differs from other AI models and generative AI

ServiceTypeBest for
Hugging FaceSharing platform for models, datasets and demo apps + inference APIFinding and obtaining a wide range of open models; publishing your own models and demos
QwenAlibaba's LLM (chat, API, open weights)Running a publicly released LLM in your own environment
Stable DiffusionOpen-weight image generation modelUsing an image generation model itself
ComfyUINode-based generative AI toolCombining and running models obtained from Hugging Face and elsewhere locally

Qwen and Stable Diffusion are "models", ComfyUI is a "tool" that runs models, and Hugging Face is the "place" where those models are distributed and shared. When using open models, a common combination is to find and download the model on Hugging Face and run it with a tool like ComfyUI or your own code.

The information on this page is as of October 10, 2026, and is based on Hugging Face's official website (home page, pricing page, Terms of Service, Privacy Policy) and official documentation (billing, storage limits, ZeroGPU, Inference Providers pricing). Prices and features may change, so please check the official website for the latest information.
